Did UNA ask you to pull it? As it wasn't a charity auction I could see them not wanting you using their Adopt-A-Landmine brand to help promote your sale without a guarantee they'd see their cut. This is the United Nations after all, not Earl's Minefield Charity of Lodi...
Why don't you talk to UNA of USA about auctioning the bass at the Adopt-A-Minefield Benefit Gala 2005 in November? It would be a win/win for the buyer as well as you. With the eBay auction the buyer wouldn't get the tax deduction, you would. Not much incentive there for the buyer to pay for your tax-deductable donation... with their live auction it's the über wealthy all in the same room bidding on an iconic item with the icon standing there with it.
Plus, Paul will be there, and could play it during his set before the auction. That puts you in the room with the man, him playing the bass, and it selling with everything above the $50,000 you want in your pocket going ot the charity. All the things you are looking for (except having him sign it, which I always thought was a bad idea.)
They do a great job of advertising the event, including Leno promoting it on The Tonight Show, as he's the MC. Certainly more publicity than an eBay auction. They got $50,000 for the second McCartney Signature Texan at the 2004 event, which is $30,000 over it's value. Who knows, maybe Paul would buy it in that context. If not, someone he knows would. Eather way it's win/win for everyone.
