I ended up learning how to do fret jobs because of Rotos! I also put jumbo wire on my Ricks. After the frets start going they just don't sound as clean as they did when new (with the small fret wire), so the jumbo frets helped.

Keep in mind that I haven't really played any 4003's, so I don't really know what they are like. I think I've picked up a couple of them in music stores over the years.

I could see why the 2000 wouldn't fit in a 70's case since they made the body larger... or it looks a bit larger anyway. It's those fat body horns!

Yeah it is the horns, I think they're a tad bit longer too. I like them, lots of bottom, very powerful pickups and built like a tank, they sound great.

My 60's basses have suffered the Roto fret eating problem too. I think they were the mandatory string back in the day...
I read somewhere that someone had said that the jumbo frets give those fragile 60's necks a little more stability too.

They were synonymous with round wounds back then like Fridgidaire used to be with refrigerator. I thought they were the first and only RW for a long time.
