Ill leave finger nails alone if you leave fender alone.

I cut my nails alot now just so i dont have that annoying hit every now and then. Its annoying when its unplaned and just happens randomly. But i guess i never let them get long enough to do what you guys are talking about.

don't even bother talking to classical guitarists

No doubt. Image Personally I've always hated the click of my fingernails. So I try to be pretty careful how I manicure my nails...but no thanks on hardeners and polish! Image

Guess that might be way I've never gotten that "Geddy" sound. Just like maybe the reason I've never gotten the Squire sound is I usually don't use a pick!

It's all becoming clear to me now...

John, there is a nail product called Onymyrrh that fingerstyle players use. It's brushed on the cuticle area to harden NEW growth. Onymyrrh was originally used to strengthen horses hooves. From what I understand, it's pretty hard to find, but it is available online.

Here's a article by guitarist Mark Hanson that you might want to check out.

thanks Kenn,

Some of the ideas in the article sound pretty extreme (ping pong balls), but it was an interesting read. I'll keep my eye out for that product.

At this point I will give the nail strategy a try and see how I like the sound in a band setting. I agree that the nail sound can be bad, but only if it comes out of the blue when you don't want it.
