BTW, that's the earliest bass I have seen without the fingergrip. Anyone have an earlier example?

Mine is one month earlier, June 72, has a finger rest, but there's some debate over whether it was original to the instrument.


You can see the holes drilled for it here. Bob Scott had a finger rest made for her and fitted it prior to selling her to me.

Lift up the guard and see if the holes are drilled by the toaster rout Jim.
That will tell you...

Bob, it appears to me that you stole the bass at that price. You should be arrested for that! Or worse, be forced to give the bass to me.

Bob Scott, did you recall seeing holes on the body before the rest was fitted.

It looks like it has a V63 tailpiece too, I see 2 additional screws....

This one somebody posted it here before ,way back cant remember the thread ,i remember the case and it was in such fine shape everyone thought it was a refine because the owner said he restored it [restored]can mean many things as simple as replacing a corroded screw.absolutely stunning no matter what the case is absolutely beautiful.

I actually don’t mind too much if there is the odd thing about it when it arrives that is not 100%. Actually I would be surprised if it is not a refin, I mean have you checked out the condition…! But at the relatively modest price I paid I think the words gift horse and mouth spring to mind.

Just had a good chat with the owner of the bass, he has a ‘69 4001 and a CS. I asked if the ’69 was for sale and he said that is totally a keeper.

The bass is getting to me this Friday, and now I have to go to France for 2 weeks with my work.... Dohhh. I will give full report on my return.

Well back from France and trilled to see my new bass.

The condition was too good to be true for its age and it is a refin, as I suspected. Someone did a top job on this bass it is a joy to behold. The downsides are…. At some stage the neck has ‘popped’, but the delaminating only reached about the 2nd fret and the repair has to be looked for to be seen, if that makes any sense.

I need to adjust the truss rods as there is just a touch too much bow in the neck at the moment. I popped off the TRC to find the nuts are at quite a steep angle facing down, and that they go through what looks like a plate of thick brass. This plate looks a bit different from my other 4001’s and I am guessing that it is not the original.

With my other 4001’s I can just about fit a ¼” socket over the nut and tighten in the approved, pre stressing the neck fashion. The angle of the ones on my bass are so steep that I cann’t get the socket over them. Is there a special type of spanner that is recommended to do this with as there is quite a space restriction in that area?

The pick guard is a replacement and there was originally a thumb rest fitted. The bridge pick up has the old slotted heads on the pole pieces, does this mean that they adjustable? The underside of the toaster has magnets sticking down about ¼”, is this normal?

Obviously then there are a couple of ‘issues’ on this bass. No more or less than I suspected really. I wish I could put into words how she looks though… without question the most beautiful 4001 that I have ever seen.
