On second thought, maybe I'll pass on the Thunderbird after reading all these broken headstock stories.

Hee hee...yes I'm afraid it's true. The newer ones have an improved design, but then again they're...newer.

The neck is so thin it's scary. Plus the headstock is big AND angled to the back.
They don't sit on stands worth a damn & my drunk *** knocked it off the stand one time.
It was like the slow motion "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO.....!" in the movies.
It survived unscathed, but I understand why 95% of T-birds on ebay say "headstock repair".

Too true; I feel a little too ginger about knocking this thing about. John Stephan, among others, does an extremely effective technique essentially gluing a thick veneer to the headstock/neck join.

Sorry about that, Peter, wouldn't want to contribute to a spirit of dispropitiatedness

I've only ever owned Rics, I've only ever wanter to own Rics, long as they're Fireglo.
Since 1973 I've been a Ric-O-Holic, and perfectly happy with the affliction !!!
ps . I do have a P-bass, but the nice folks at Fender gave it me, so doesn't count.

"it has the biggest case ever"
I think that award goes to the hardshell case for the Alembic Spoiler/Exploiter body style I had a few years ago, like Entwistle's Alembics.

I have one even bigger case! For the Ampeg AEB-1.

Never seen either one of those cases, but if they're bigger than the T-bird I feel for you gentlemen!!
Lars, do you still have the AEB-1?
Always liked those...

Yes, I have it! A very strange bass...
But beautyful, and interesting historicly and soundwise!

Rick Danko played one of those for awhile...just the one p/u in the bridge?
Kind of a quirky bass, huh?

Danko's fretless had a magnetic PU. His sounded really good. The problem with the PU system on this one is that the whole bass is microphonic. It's more like an amped upright.

So that's the difference? The fretless model had the bridge p/u? I never knew that.
So, how responsive is yours?
I assume it's VERY mellow...
Man, they look fantastic though!

I have a natural finish Bicentennial Bird. When I bought it I told the store that I have a Rick and they said something like "oh, we thought that it would go to a home that had a Rickenbacker bass also!".
I'd love to own a '65-'69 non-reverse Thunderbird IV.
