Your boy's set!
We're probably gonna buy her an Epiphone EB-0. For one it's a short-scale, and for two it's nice to have variety in a home studio!

Man i wish growing up there were basses and guitars around my place. Im kinda the one and only Artist person in my family. And the only one that enjoys music to a point where they want to make it.... i still dont know if i could let a kid play my bass tho. My little brother is 7 or 8 (sad i dont know his age i know).. and he wont even get close now. Cause he knows ill go off on him. The family is sorta supportive tho. Mom was proud when i learned Happy Birthday.... But me learning some Rush tunes wasnt a big deal to her... I dont get it. Rush Zeppelin Sabbath Hendrix RHCP and others... and i dont get a damn thing out of her. And i play happy birthday and shes just so excited. I dont get it...

I think I am going to get us a matching set of a P-bass Jr. and a Strat Jr. for Christmas. Just something for me to plunk around with my kid. On the serious side of it, though. This is my only kid and I really appreciate this time with him. I am a teacher and too often I see kids who don't have their parents in their lives. Even if they are at home, they are so wrapped up in their own lives or careers to be involved with their kids. Music was one thing that kept me in touch with my dad growing up. My brother and I are both musicians as adults and music has really become a tie between my son, me, his grandfather and his uncle. It has really bonded my family. I am not the world's best player, but I have fun with music and as I watch my son grow and I learn more from my students at school, I learn to appreciate music and what it has done in my life.

The thing is the music has to touch you somehow. As much as I can listen to Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, My mom can't stand more than a song or two. Your mom probably doesn't dig Hendrix or Zeppelin, but I'll bet if you play her Happy Birthday on her big day, it'll mean more to her than anything you can put in a box and slap a bow on. About my kid and the bass, he's actually pretty careful with it. He usually sits on the floor and waits for me to hand it to him so he doesn't drop it while he tries to sit. This time he just moved it over from the couch to his rocker. Hey, he's my kid and it's my bass. It'll be ok. He's learning at a young age how to be responsible with an instrument.

I also grew up in a non-musical family... then when I became a teenager half of my closest friends lived their entire lives surrounded by it. Jacob, are you familiar with Coheed and Cambria? They're all from my town and I first met their drummer when he was 11. His father toured with every member of The Band, both separately and as a whole... he even took my '81 4003 out when he played bass with Garth Hudson. Anyway, being around that whole type of vibe got me to realize that was what I wanted my kids to have, and I'm loving the fact that my kids love music already.
As for them playing my instruments... it's cool. I taught my daughter the right way to hold one, and I watch her REALLY close when she plays my bass!

Bob, that's exactly what I meant about music giving common ground. Your kid now has a love for music. You become an even bigger mentor for her. That, ultimately is what music is about to me. Coming together with my friends and family for enjoyment. It isn't about gigging (even though that is enjoyable too,) or making money (even though some make a lot of it with music, just not me,) or anything else, for me it is just having fun and spending time with people you like. That first pic in this thread, of my dad, that was a family get together. My dad and his 4 brothers got their instruments out and just had a good time in the backyard. Cookout? Who needs a stereo? Let's make our OWN music!

My nine year old son Jeremy received his first electric guitar on his second birthday and he's turning out to be extremely talented musically. His guitar work is where I was at age 18! He's also learning piano and has a natural feel for the drums.
Now and again he'll pick up a Rickenbacker, however he usually goes for something pointy...his Gibson Flying V or the Hamer Explorer.
He's already composing songs and he let's me join in on bass or drums. There's nothing quite like playing and recording your own son's compositions. We've demoed a number of his tracks already...you'd never pick they were written and played by a 9 year old! Look out Foo Fighters...you have competition!!
Only 50 days to go until we fly to the US together for the Great American Guitar Adventure!

That's really cool. I really look forward to the day I can invite my son up to jam with us. Who knows? maybe he'll play "Mary Had a Little Lamb" with us soon. Darren, the family resemblance is striking!!
