I wouldn't buy an amp unless I knew which way they were rating their power specs, there are a lot of misleading ways out there. Watts RMS @ % distortion is the only true rating that can be compared to another amp. If it doesn't say RMS chances are it isn't.
I just went to their website and the power is only given in watts there also.

While it's pricey, and doesn't have a headphone out... the Mesa Walkabout Scout is a seriously awesome little bugger! The band was up in Houston for a gig last weekend, and we took a sidetrip (as musicians will do) to the local GC. Plugged a not-too-well-setup, pedestrian Squier J-Bass into that little thing and...

WHOA!

If the opportunity arises, that little amp is definitely on my "gottaget" list!

Robert, remember different acoustics in stores can really make it hard to appreciate amps differences. Try the same brands in different stores if you can.

Robert: I've been using Genz Benz for four years and love them. I started out with a 2 x10 & tweeter combo that tilted back (200 watts). I now have the NEOx 400 1x12 & tweeter, which gives me more bottom that 2x10 and has roughly twice the power. GB has a very nice EQ section with bass boost, mid scoop and signal attack (highs) that really help a five string. I run my current amp only about 1/3 of the way in volume and virtually flat on EQ (a lot of which I attribute to my Lakland 55-94 sounding so good to begin with). It has more than enough power and weighs about 65 pounds. Only drawback is that the list price is $1500, so street is in excess of $900. I was lucky to get it through the music store I work in at half price. I've had no trouble with this amp, but the first one had some kind of problem with its circuit board that caused the volume to cut in half without warning. A trip to the shop fixed it under warranty. They are exceptionally clean, punchy amps that still manage to havemore than enough low end. I haven't tried any of the newer amps like SWR or Ashdown. I did briefly have an Eden Time Traveler and never did like its sound. GB upgraded the 2 x 10 I had with its current model, which I think has more power. The cabinet no longer tilts, though.

Does anyone know if the Ashdown combos have headphone jacks? I've heard good stuff about their small combos (lots of power in a small package), and it's tempting. Annie's is an Ashdown dealer as well, but they didn't have a combo in the store, and all the music supply websites don't say whether there's a headphone jack or not.

Basically, no matter how good an amp is, there are two requirements that it ABSOLUTELY MUST MEET: it must have a headphone jack, and it must be easily attainable at $500 or less.

Bob: unfortunately, only one of the two stores is an Ampeg dealer, so I can only try out the Ampeg in one of them, and the other is the only Genz Benz/Ashdown dealer. Both are Hartke dealers, though, so I can check the Kickback12 in both locations. Thanks for all the comments so far. They've been very helpful.

I like my Ampeg BA115 and use it quite a bit at gigs. I've used it at a lot of outdoor gigs as well. I saw mine on the bay and it ended with no bids, so I emailed the guy (since he lived close) and he sold it to me for $300. I've seen a lot of them go for around $300 on the bay. It's not an SVT, but I think a Rick sounds great through any Ampeg.

Robert: New, a Genz Benz will run at least $650. There is however a used 200 watt 2x10 like I used to have on Ebay now> Check it out.

Its not a combo, but for what its worth, I'm thinking of throwing my Ampeg B2-R on the 'bay.

Its in excellent condition, comes racked in a Grundorf 4 space carpet covered rack, with a DOD power supply. Im thinking of asking $400.00

Nice little amp. Simple, and 350 watts into 4 Ohms.

The store where I found the Genz Benz offered it to me for $449.99, same as a new Ampeg BA115. And I know for a fact that the Genz Benz is brand new, except for sitting in the store for a month or so.

Oh, and the B2R would be nice, but I don't have a cab for it, and I don't really want to plug it into the Fender combo that I've got right now. Thanks, though. I've heard great stuff about the B2R.

It's a GBE 100-115T. It looked really nice in the store, but I have yet to play through it. I'm going to be making rounds later this week to see which one I like.
