that would be thud ...
no attack, no definition, no bite, no punch, no clarity, just thud thud thud ... not a sound that I like ...
uh oh ... you got me going again ...

and don't forget the Rickenbacker "Klank" sound ... for that I think of Geddy Lee playing "Freewill"

Seems funny Jeff, I feel I gained on all those things when I switched to flats. I just lost the high overtones that get in the way of the guitars. It's at a lower frequency but the other band members say they can hear me better now. And not once have I been told to turn down, where with round wounds, it was a constant battle! Even the sound man likes it better!

I get the right sound with round wound strings, the line 6 bass pod, an ampeg b2r, eminence 10's, an sm57, a big PA, and the right eq settings ...
If I showed up with a 4 string, and flats, and no bass pod I would get fired from my band ...

Cultures and even individuals can't agree entirely on what is being 'heard'...then there's the problem of trying to represent the sound in 'writing'.
Comparing onomatopoeia of various cultures bears this out: the Balinese will swear to you that their dogs are saying "Gong! Gong! Gong!"...

My old drummer used to call it a "Gink" bass! Sort of like "Gonk"
On the Line 6 Variaxe bass they call it "Clang!"

Speaking of dog-speak, what about "Bark" - as in Ricken-barker? That's what my band-mates used to call my bass!

I like how Rick basses can sound really woody when played with a pick,(like someone chopping down an oak tree) then sound more metallic after digging in even harder, esp with a tube amp(like someone chopping down a big flagpole).Ouch!

They can sound pretty much anyway you want them to sound, they are very versatile basses, very responsive to the way they are played.
