He was saying he likes the tone of the bridge pickup, but the neck pickup he wants more bassy. So whether the cap was there or not wouldn't matter in relation to the neck pickup right folks? I would say he should put in a HB1 in the neck position and that would get him where he wants to go, although if the cap is still in the bridge, the volume would be off.

I have tried that scenario ... in theory it sounds good but the reality is I was disappointed in that arrangement ...

in my opinion I think a 4001 sounds really good with 4003 high gains and no capacitor

I'm with Jeff ,on this one, try a pair of high gains [before bbbbarts]see if that doesn't wake that thing up they have so much more bottom.

also a 4001 sounds good with the 4001 high gain pickups and the capacitor removed and you just turn up the volume and bass a little ...

Personally I like the sound of the 4003 hi gains more than the 4001 hi gains too, and better than the toaster too. I do like the sound of the horseshoe also, regardless of the surround getting in the way of more aggresive playing.

I was just saying that everyone seemed to be saying that getting rid of the cap on the bridge pickup was the answer, and ignoring the fact that he wanted more bottom from the neck pickup, not the bridge. I haven't tried HB1's in a bass, and you would think they would be the answer for more bottom, but since you've tried it and didn't like it much, I can go with that Jeff!

Jeff, that would make sense since the bridge pickup usually has less output and bottom than the neck PU... so a hotter bridge PU is the way to go.

Bartolini even has matched sets like this.. a bassy hotter bridge PU and a cleaner brighter neck PU.

One of the guys on here put an HB1 in the neck position of his 4003 and thought it gave a good range of tones. I'm going that route on my 4003 8-string conversion with the frogfoot style headstock.
