Ron...I'm sure a lot had changed between the late '60's and when you were in...but I assure you, the scrambled-eggs-on-the-shoulderboards set had staff cars then, and rode all over western Europe in them...I know, because in those days, my dad was supposed to salute them whenever we passed one on the road, which he would do while swearing under his breath. This rule has since been done away with in the interest of safety and keeping both hands on the wheel...
I will say that from my experience with the military (fourteen years as an army dependent and nine years working side-by-side with rank-and-file navy 'swabs') that it would be wrong to say that all officers are spoiled upper-class twits who couldn't run a hardware store on the outside...it would be more correct to characterize a mere 90% of them that way...
