I just got mine back from Jeff, I traded it to him and bought it back, after playing with it the other night, it sounds great! I made a 'backup rig' with a spare power amp and the Sansamp in a rack case, just in case we are out on the road and my main amp develops problems, I'm all set with a backup. We're doing some roadwork the next few weeks and didn't want to get caught without a Sansamp! It's good!!

I was going back and forth between the programmable Sansamp and the Fulltone Bassdrive before finally choosing the Fulltone. They both sounded great.....I just liked the lowend from the Fulltone a little better.
I have never been happier with my tone so I know how you feel about the Sansamp!

I guess I'm too old for the second wave of "metal". We considered Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Grand Funk, heck, even Humble Pie as "heavy metal" back in the day. Motorhead, Metallica, Motley Crue, et.al, were after my time! I think the lines blurred between heavy metal, hard rock, and acid rock in the seventies. Heavy metal to my crowd meant power chords.

The thing is, Metallica and Motorhead are like good metal, whereas Motley Crue is bad hair metal. Both metal, but still different. And Cliff Burton helps too.

I own both the Sans Amp Pedal and theSans Amp RBI rackmount version. I love them both, they have one very distinct difference in sound and that is the RBI has ALOT more mids. It has a seperate mid control which the pedal dosn't have. If you like the pedal and feel you lack mids, try the rackmount, it's night and day.

I have the SansAmp bass pedal too. I used to use it with my stage amp set flat. I set the pedal to a good sound, then sent that sound directly to the board. Worked well.
Then I bought an Ampeg SVP Pro Preamp and an SVP1200 solid state poweramp. SansAmp was then placed in crate forever. Nothing beats a good tube preamp.

i have the newer sansamp bass di programmable. I set up a clean tone on channel one that works well with my Rickenbacker, and another clean on channel three that works well with my nasty Yamaha BB-300 w/active eq. Haven't used channel two yet but I reckon i might set it up with a little more drive for the Rick.
I pipe that into an Art ProChannel for any compression I might want (and EQ if i want, too)
Caveat: I'm a studio guy, and new to the bass from the drums.
I really like the SansAmp programmable bass DI. for about $20 more (new prices) than the non-programmable one, I think it's worth the upgrade to have pedal-button program recall on the fly.
On the other hand, although the used regular SansAmp Bass DI's seem to hold their value on eBay recently, that all may change as more programmables get out there, so there may be some great deals ahead on the non-programmable from eBay.
My bass teacher seems to ***** up his ears and take a renewed interest in my Rick when I play it through the SansAmp.
(He's a p-bass kinda guy. has a nice MusicMan and a nice G&L. I have to figure he'd just never really thought about a Rick before, because he keeps say things like, "So that's a Rick huh?" and "That Rickenbacker sounds real good." =D )

That programmble Sansamp BDDI seems to have a mid control. That would solve my problem when I use a fretless bass. I think I may go for one of those.
Might be selling the regular BDDI.

I would like to get close to the Geddy tone. Is there much difference between the rack version and the programmable bassdriver?
An advantage for me is that the programmable bassdriver is more portable..
What do you think?

Wait, which ones have mid controls and which ones don't? That would be THE deciding factor, at least for me.

the rack version has mid controls.. but i don't need it as a pre-amp, just as an effect..
