That's the amazing thing about cigarettes. Some people never get cancer and smoke. Then again, just which cigarette is it that pushes one over the edge at a certain point? George is smoking like a fiend in the Let It Be outtakes on the Anthology. I read an interview with him in 79 where he says he whished he could stop smoking. Like finance, it's another instance where Macca's influence didn't take. As Paul seemed to quit smoking in the early 80s, a time when of course when it was hip to be square.

Some people smoke , drink to excess and live long lives go figure, That has to be in the genes of that individual. Yul Brunner died of lung cancer, he went on the Tonight Show and told Johnny he wishes he'd never smoked and urged viewers to quit. Some have the desire but lack the will. Some quit cold turkey with no problems. I can't imagine the pressures that they were put under. Under the media microscope, pressure to crank out tunes. egad!! Everyone wants to get close to you, who do you trust. We all react to pressure in differant ways and sometimes in unhealthy ways. Maybe Paul's wife encouraged him to take better care of his physical life because he had a wife and kids that needed him and I'm sure her Dad helped him with financial planning ect. His influence was not wanted I reckon.

In the way back machine lots of people smoked and it was cool to so back then. I smoked a little one year in high school and did'nt care for it. Same thing on drinking I did one year in college and stopped.
My Grandfather smoked cigerattes, pipes, and cigars. He had the most yellow stained teeth I have ever seen. But he had them all when he died and he lived to be ninety seven.
George Burns make no bones about his love for cigars and some drinks and lived to be a hundred.
You can't realistically ask for more than that ten or now.
We just try and protect ourselves the best way we can and we have more knowledge of how to do it now than ever.
Finances is another thing entirely. Some like Paul handle them well and some don't. One thing I think that drove Paul is that he was so afraid of what would happen if he did'nt do well.
They say fear can be a healthy thing.

>>Some people smoke , drink to excess and live long lives go figure, That has to be in the genes of that individual.<< Jackie Gleason lived well into his 80s, eating, drinking and smoking in excess. However, had he not done all that, he probably would have lived longer and without the quad bypass surgery. To an extent, I see a similarity between him and Harrison. Both were public figures because they did things that were vastly popular. Yet both were pretty shy. Gleason I think did one Carson appearance EVER. As far as the finances go, yeah there's evidence that Macca was sweating that kind of stuff when he was 12 and his Mom, the family breadwinner, died. You have to think his Dad told him to take care of his money. And he said that later, when they'd made it, he was hanging out with a show biz person or two and they told him to save and learn how to invest his dough in publishing. He was wise to listen. In contrast to Paul's worry about money at a young age, George and John lived in houses that, for all John's other childhood fears and problems, were financially sound. Yes Paul's father in law helped in the early 70s but let's face it, had he and Linda gotten divorced, putting his finances in his in-laws hands would have been no more wise than going with Klein. Really, they all were clueless, not to mention lazy, when that was going on. And had Epstein lived, things would have been vastly different. For one, like George said, he probably never would have been able to buy Friar Park. Brian would have vetoed the idea.
