Brain ... you have a similar problem like what I had when I owned my 1968 4001 ... it became too valuable to use ... for a while I stored it in a case under a bed ... but finally I sold it ... I say get the most out of the bass while you have it string it with rounds and get the Lemmy sound out of it ...

I'm just not a fan of tapewounds and find them to sound pretty dead....maybe I just tried the wrong sets. My experience was enough to make me very hesitant to try them again.

Jeff....don't get me wrong I have no intention of tucking it away just because it is worth five times what I paid for it. I just would like to slow down any wear/tear that it is likely to suffer from normal use. If I can get "close enough" to my tone with flats then I'll go that route to limit fret wear but if it kills my tone then I guess I'll have a refret to look forward to in the semi-distant future. The only thing concerns me about it being valuable is that others that have them will just store them away and "collect" them rather than use them as intended. My point of view is that even if it suffers from use over the years that it will still be worth far more than what I paid for it. To me it is priceless but at the same time it becomes worthless if it never gets used.

My 4005WB is worth about 30 times what I paid for it and I'll be damned if I am not going to enjoy playing it and give others the pleasure of seeing it in performance.

Play your Lemmy to your heart's content Brian, after all, isn't that why you got it in the first place?
