OK so getting back to my initial post... I finally settled on a SansAmp RBI.. (the rackmount version of the popular bass driver/DI) ... man oh man it is nice! great sound control, dead quiet in between... and I don't need to play at foundation cracking volume to get a nice warm growl. And, it sounds great with both the '75 4001 and newer/hotter p'ups in the '90 4003. Aside from the rackability, it has a dedicated mid control wich is a major plus.. as well as more output options than the stompbox. Glad I finally got it.

Thanks for the report Joel.
I've been thinking about getting a SansAmp Bass Driver (non-rackmount).

Good job, Joel! I've been thinking of buying an RBI; how is it at producing the "grainy" texture associated with the classic Yes or Spock's Beard type of sound?

It is very easy to dial in that "classic" Squire/earlier GeddyLee sound. It comes with sample settings (in picture form) such as SVT, Kings X, solo..and maybe 4 or 5 more.. these are pretty good starting points, you would just need to dial in a bit for your speaker situation. I did add an equalizer between the SansAmp and the poweramp for even more control. I have a tape of my old band where I got "that sound" with 4001..but I had to play so loud to get it.

Thanks, Joel. I am relieved to hear this as I ordered an RBI just this morning. I'm looking forward to dialing!
