Also someone noted in a shot of my 4000 & 4001 together that there was a different spacing of the neck on the body. It is 3/16" shorter from the neck to the short horn, & 1/4" shorter from the neck to the long horn on the 4001. I had never noticed this before. It must be because of the added dimensions needed for the binding on the body.

Also, the 50's chickenhead knobs are just something I added for a different look. This bass always was a player, not a collector's piece. I played beautifully when I got it in '85 (still does)-never had any neck adjustments(still has factory paint daubs on the truss rods). The action can be set as low as any Les Paul guitar I've ever seen without a buzz, except now it's tuned down 1/2 step so I had to raise it a bit.

The question I have now is the cap.
Which one is correct, Kevin's or mine????

Dave, your bass looks like factory stock wiring. Your pots are coded at the top too, again factory.
Kevin's thinner single strand wiring looks non original to these eyes, as do the pots.

The pots are original, as was everything when I got it in '85, but the wiring is my doing since I put in a SD humbucker & split/series/paralell switch. Also I put a new .47 cap in as my soldering skills aren't that great & I burned the original. It was a yellow Taiwan .047 MFD 200 VDC cap. I still have it if you want to see a pic.

Here's my 1975 4000 in Jetglo. I had my eyes on it for a year as it had been hanging collecting dust in a used instruments store in Melbourne. I finally decided to try it out one day and fell in love with it.

Darren, is that the original JG finish?
It looks brand new.

Dave,
Yup, the finish is all original and she has a few nicks and scratches on the rear.....but nothing serious. I also polished her up before snapping the photo too! I want a Fireglo one now ;^)

Here's mine, '75 mapleglo. Worn finish so I don't have to worry about dings as much. It came with the badass bridge, but I won't change it to stock, it plays like butter. I love this bass... Perfect for blues, classic rock, and my own songwriting!

Here's a Fireglo 73. Split tailpiece and Grover Wave tuning machines. Notice the squared off edges on the chrome surround along with the small gap between the surround and the pickguard.
This is not my bass. I saved the photo when I saw it a few years ago. I do have a larger version if anyones interested.

My local Guitar Center has a pretty nice used FG one. I think it's a '75. Really slim neck. They're asking $2200 in the store, $2000 on eBay. Is that too much?

Jeez, that's a lot of green for a 4000! I only paid $750 Canadian for mine in '85. I'm the second owner & the only one who ever cleaned & polished the darn thing. 10 years of beer spillage makes the pickgaurd quite hard to get off!
