I remember seeing John Kerry make the "teeny-tiny" sign in some video taken at one of his rallies early in the race for the Democratic nomination...he had finished his speech and left the podium and was talking to supporters on the floor of the hall, when someone at the sound board fired up the tune "Puff The Magic Dragon", and JK immediately flashed that international sign...

It was a 'lightbulb moment' for me...

I'd just like to know if the guys in Saudi Arabia are buyin' those expensive cloth doilies to be worn by 'their' women or themselves...
I didn't get where I am today by being on time...

Paul, I believe that John said that line in Girl was about Christian/Catholicism beliefs that people have to suffer on Earth to get to heaven. I think its the Rolling Stone interviews.

Makes sense and casts the song in a different light.

One could see it as a sarcastic swipe at Christianity, not surprisingfor John, or one could see him contrasting the conventional, God/country morality against an amoral party girl.
