If it were me, I'd go for the club bass. A friend of mine owed one of these (way back in the 60s) that I played many times. I had a 65 violin bass at the time (and I own a different 65 violin bass now) and the club bass was a nice change. If I were buying another Hofner, I'd definitely get the club bass.

Congrats on the purchase and welcome to the Forum. I have a Jetglo C64S somewhere in my house and it's a great bass.

Welcome aboard Richard - a C64S is quite an entrance!

I have owned several Hofners over the years, all of them were vintage pieces (sold my last one before the reissues were produced). In fact my first bass (in 1975) was a 500/1 (blade pickups, bound neck) and the last one I had was a 500/2 "Club bass" (staple pickups), now owned by fellow forumite Marc Lazare. I traded it even for a '73 Ric 4001, which financially was a stupid thing to do, but what can I say, any Ric 4001/4003 is a much better bass than an old Hofner. You could say I bought my first Hofner for the same reason McCartney bought his: it was the cheapest bass around. All through the 70's and early 80's they were bought and sold here for around $100, and no-one asked if it was old or new or whatever. In all fairness, the only Hofner bass that sounded good to me, was a solid body (masonite, actually) Model 182 covered in red vinyl, exactly like this one.

Ron, I don't think we've seen a pic yet...
