Back at work Darren!! My boss is racing at Bathurst this w/end in his '69 Boss Mustang, so he closed the shop Tuesday and gave us the rest of the week off! You would think that'd give me some time to play awhile with my 360!WRONG!

Spoke to Darren tonight. He's going to give you a call regarding a 'mini confluence'. We figured that with your commitments with bubs and the wifey it would be better if you had first choice of a date. We're looking at the second half of this month if that's a possibilty.

I'm certainly looking forward to meeting you! I'll be bringing all the Ricks and a couple of others, the Vox AC30, the Janglebox and a couple of other trinkets. I'll need to know the date asap so I can book a rental truck!!

Bathurst is the provincial city where Australia's greatest motor racing event takes place every year. 20 to 25 V8 supercars capable of 280 to 300km down 'Conrod Straight' muscling their way around a track that basically goes up a small mountain, across the top and down again.

One thousand kilometres of hell for the drivers (there are two of them these days), pit crews and spectators, many of whom sit in the back of 'utes' in armchairs and empty cans of the amber fluid for two days!!

Sophisticates like me put the telly on at 8.00am for the preliminaries, get the bacon and eggs going, and crack the first 'tinnie' just before the start at 10.00am. By 4.30pm (roughly when the race finishes) you're basically 'shikkered' and couldn't care less who won, as long as your manufacturer 'saluted the judge' first. It's a Ford versus Holden (GM) thing....

Of course the all day 'barbie' is obligatory - steaks, snags (sausages), burgers, spuds (potatoes), 'chingwings' (chicken wings) and satay sticks are the go! And heaps of 'pee one five ess' (booze)!!!

A 'bingle' is what you experienced at an intersection earlier this year while driving the Saab!

Hope you 'unnerstan' all of the above!! I'm sure if you Google 'Bathurst 1000' you'll find plenty of info.

LOL! That sounds just like the way rednecks enjoy NASCAR races on this side of the globe!

NASCAR is huge here. My favorite part about it is the clothing/attire. I can imagine the brainstorming sessions during the design phase:

'less jus put ALL the colors on it sos we can please everyone'

I understand the skill it take to drive at those speeds, but I've never understood the attraction to the sport. Still it's fun to tease the fans.

AH geez Howard...now I have visions of Mel Gibson high atop a desert peak, dressed in rag tag leather & skins watching this race and plotting how to get THEIR GAS MAN !!!!!! Well, where is Auntie Entity when you need her...............

I'm not a fan of oval racing at all. They started up NASCAR (love the answer, Noel) over here a few years back and it died in the bum very quickly. We've been spoilt by better and far more exciting forms of racing. One of the best is the Carrera Cup - 30 Porsches of varying specification bashing their way around like dodgem cars!!

Having said that, I absolutely LOVE the opening sequence of "Days Of Thunder"! The music building up, the thumping donks getting louder and louder..... crank up the home theatre system to 60 on a scale of 65 - MAGIC!!

Er.... in anticipation of comments and questions, a 'donk' is a colloquial term for an engine...........

The racing side of it doesnt interest me, but as it's my trade, i do enjoy restoring classic cars of the 50's, 60's and 70's! I built this'69 mustang and am praying it comes back from the mountain in 1 piece!
And ,No Howard, i wouldn't have been given a weekend "pass" by the GLW!...BUT... am working on a "daypass" for the mini confluence with you guys!
