Yes, I do remember discussing the one you're referring to, Andrew. It was Mapleglo, right? And it was for sale in... England?
The rather enigmatic 21 fret 4001 basses... How many were made? When were they introduced/discontinued? Were they available in any other finishes besides FG, BG, JG and MG? And during the couple of years they were available, were 20 fret 4001s available as well? Oddly enough, nobody seems to be able to answer such simple questions...

I can't remember seeing a 20 fret bass from late 70, very early 71....

I would imagine they made a small run at this time of 21 fretters and with the lull in sales at the time this is predominantly what we see today...

I have seen 70 and 71 20 fret basses!
I would have to agree with Andy it seems late 70 early 71 they were experimenting. This would be something to ask Dale.

Anybody ever see one of the few shortscale 4001s? I came across one once accidentally but had a cashflow problem and the shop wasn't set up to take credit cards (small dealer many years ago)...although I never actually saw it. It was advertised in a dealers ad in a guitar mag and I was trying to buy it as a spare for my 72 (pretty much same spec but mapleglo), and when I phoned about it he said, "oh it's a bit wierd this one, it's a short scale". Missed out there.....although it may have been a bit odd to play.

Now,thats cool!Peter.

Project 21 fretter:

Well I managed to save the guard by sanding the black paint off with a DA then wet sanding it[with 2000 g] and buffing it out,it looks great.
The body is stripped ready for Fireglo.

The hardware is going to re plating shop on monday....
All the pots wiring and pickups are original.
The solder joint for the toaster[short magnets] has come loose will re-solder

All pots are dated 8/70...

I looked in my local paint shop but the didn't have Fireglo paint in stock, however they did have some nice tartan paint and some rather cool chequered paint and they said that they can order striped paint.Image
