Ron...I seriously looked at J basses, including the Geddy model, before finally getting my Laredo in March. The Geddy J was a real nice bass, especially for the price, but I didn't like that it wasn't an American made guitar. The new American J Bass was good too (maple neck) but I really didn't want/trust the S-1 switch. It's tough to know just how the actual bass would compare without really putting it through it's paces, but...
I've been playing my fretless J a little more lately, and I notice that the difference in the PU output is a big deal, enough to make up my mind that the next musical equipment move is new humbuckers for the J. It needs about the same output as the Laredo for me to use it effectively.
I understand that you're talking about a 4003, but as I understand the PU's are about 11-12 ohm (kilo-ohms I suppose?) on the new 4003's, where as the J's are probably about the same as my 4001 - 7-8 kOhms.
BTW, happy birthday (a day late) Red Baron!
