Peter... the preamp is one tube only. I know that is not the problem since I just replaced it and I can switch to the solid state preamp and still get the cracking sound.

I had a chat with Genz Benz today and I must say that they have great service. Fast replies to emails and really helpful people when I called (at first they were busy so called me back). They suggested trying the amp on a diff cab, and a diff amp on this cab to be sure that it is the speaker. The nice service really makes a difference in my books...
