I used to have a 1977 4001, and I hated the pickup cover. I removed it and never looked back. I now have a 4001V63, and believe it or not,I LOVE the handrest/pick-up cover and would never think of removing it. It serves a useful purpose,as far as I'm concerned, and the bass would not look right without it.

I *finally* (after owning it for over 5 years) put a pickup cover on my 4001. It works great for me, since I play close to the bridge with a pick (between the bridge and pu cover), but up near the neck when I'm fingering. I also frequently play thumb-only fingerstyle (see Brian Wilson in old Beach Boys videos), for which the pickup cover makes an ideal handrest. Plus, it looks cooler with the cover on (IMHO, of course).
