Guys, If you're getting a measurement of 3-1/8"
at the 12th fret, you are Definitely using your ruler/tape measure Wrong!Measured at the nut, a 4000-Anything bass is 1-5/8" wide, and at the body end is 2-1?4" wide. There Might,on a Rare occasion]be a deviation of 1/32" from these specs, but I have yet to see it.Go back and re-measure at the 12th fret again.And do the measuring in good light.

Dr-what is the difference between the CS neck and 4001 anyway? Contour? Width? it feels different-just can't quantify. Sorry for the ignorance, I'm a new Ric daddy!

Dr. yup 2-1/8". Better lighting and better tape measure. one QD, HS. Just as prescribed.

Fellow CS owners...has anyone experienced finish cracking on a 4001CS in the tailpiece/bridge area??? I have seen two seperate cases on early basses (1991-92) that cracked in the same spot...

I haven't seen a 4001CS for a while, but other
than different fretboard woods[Vermillion/Paduak
for CS;Bubinga for V63]I think that the back of the neck contours[radius] may be different.Then again, I had a couple V 63s; 1 from earlier-mid 80s, and 1 from late 80s, and neither neck was the same.Both were nice, but Not the same.The width of the board as veiwed from the front should be the same for both series, as I mentioned earlier.

I'm interested in 4001CS. Looks like a few complaints here; would anybody NOT recommend one? I've got a very nice V63 right now. Also, anyone have any idea what a 4001CS might go for?

WHITFORDSTHOMES; i WOULD DEFINATELY RECOMMEND 'COLLECTING' THE 4001CS. EVEN THO MY FRETBOARD IS 'UGLY'- BEAUTY IS IN THE WALLET OF THE BEHOLDER. YES MY BASS ISN'T PERFECT BUT THE PRICE WAS RIGHT. I'VE SEEN A FEW PRISTINE PIECES FOR $2000. SO SAVE THOSE DOLLARS!

Actually the CS basses are going for 1200-1400 at the moment, the last two that went on ebay were in that range, with one having a screwed up neck and a bad refret job.

Yes.....it seems that the CS basses have inherited some flaws as they age with the finish in various areas; the 370/12RM's do as well, but they are what they are and it hasnt hurt the value of the instrument one bit---the RM's keep skyrocketing.....one thing is for sure, they won't make any more of them.

The point is from a collectors stand point, the instrument that sold for $2000 last month was purchased as an investment and will never be played. The other ones were rated 5-7 overall.The one on ebay(#59) didn't inherit a flaw, it has a bad neck set from the factory and it went through several hands before it hit ebay. The 4003 colored neck series (Blackstar, Tux, and Bllodstar) will always command a higher return since the production numbers were lower. And as for the RM guitars, Ric limited edition guitars have always gotten more return than basses. With the introduction of the 4004LK that might change, but I don't expect it to.

I'm in the process of acquiring the CS4001. Serial # is 9947892, #893. It sounds like a good deal- anybody know this instrument?

Just got it today- from Chicago Music for $1290.00 One tiny ding by the pickguard, a scratch on the case, but otherwise very cool. I think this is the begiining of a beautiful friendship...

I'm looking for some expertise. If I wanted to remove the cover on the horseshoe pickup is this easy? Will it function w/out it? It's placement is a little akward for me...

whitfordsholmes-ah you were the lucky guy. called Chicago Music on monday-they said it was gone. Your experience sounds better than mine with a 4001V63 that I got from an "elderly" dealer. I've heard that the 'horseshoe' can be removed-best to hear from experts like Mark.
