Try Mike Parks:

Apparently, you have to buy the whole pickup assembly for $125.00 in order to get the surround these days. But if you bought it, I'm sure you could sell the pickup cover and the pickup on ebay to help defray the cost.

Philip,I zoomed in on the surround, you also have the pickup cranked all the way up make sure the strings are not hitting the pole pieces on the pickup.

if you're gonna trade, then why not let each of you eat your own shipping costs? shipping isn't going to be outrageous.

Speaking of surrounds, I'm unclear on when the cutout was standard. Seems like my '72s have/had them, and '73s not....

So i installed the bridge correctly. Im home again and actually its only the E string which is buzzing against the mounting ring when i hit the E string hard. But whatever note i play on the E string there is always a buzz. Is it possible it is because of fretware?
Thanks!

fretbuzz is not uncommon. if you don't hear the buzzing through your amp and it doesn't bother you to "feel" it when you play, I wouldn't worry with it.

The cutout on the bridge pickup mounting ring has always been a bit of a mystery to me. My '73 has the cutout but my '78 does not. When I look at the two basses, I can see that the '78's fingerboard is higher above the body than the '73, and thus doesn't need the mounting ring with the cutout. I actually purchased a non-cutout mounting ring for my '73 (I anchor my thumb on the bridge pickup and prefer the feel of the non-cutout), but the strings were now barely above the ring and would regularly stike it. Obviously there was a change in the fingerboard hight above the body in the early to mid 70's that precipitated the switch to the non-cutout mounting ring, but at some point it reverted back to the cutout. Does anyone have any idea of the timelines related to this feature?

When Paul W is finished with my 4003 project I'll have a chrome surround available...

I have two '73's... the earlier one has the cutout and the later one does not.

David - do the two '73's have different distances from the body to the top of the fingerboard?

I sent Mike Parks an email and he told me this:

"We have an aftermarket flat plastic ring that is the same "footprint" "

Never heard of it? What is it? What does it look like? Just a mounting ring with cut out, but then in plastic?
Thanks!
