Not doubting the awesomeness of the CS, but do they really sound/play different from a v63?

That isn't Beaver Feltons', is it, of Bass Central?

He has a mint, and I mean, COMPLETELY minted example. He's from round that end, no?

Jeff - not from what I've heard. The CS guys can enlighten you more, they're supposed to feel a little more compact, so I've heard.

The neck is a little chunkier. The fretboard radius is wide so it's a flat neck, but the neck itself is fatter than a regular 60's Ric. The edges of the fretboard aren't as rounded at on my '68. The body is the same size as near as I can tell.

When I checked out the ex-Crisman CS, it seemed identical to my V63 except for the obvious things like the finish, and the roundwounds and action vs. the flats on my V63. Nice bass, but not enough difference to consider getting; if I didn't already have the V63, that CS would be mine right now.

I've e-mailed the guy three times asking to be able to look at the bass and have yet to receive a reply...

I've owned 2 CSs and 1 V63 and the V63 sounded very little like the CSs, other than they all sounded like Ricks...the V63 was slightly more detailed and "airy" (as were the other V63s I've played), but the CSs were brighter, harder and punchier.....both my CSs have had the early "thin" neck profile whereas my V63 had the later fatter profile. Which was better? Depends on your taste. They were definitely very different though.

My V63 has the thinner neck profile. What is it that makes the CS brighter and more agressive sounding? The Vermillion fingerboard and headstock wings? The pickups and electronics are the same AFAIK.

In my experience, no two sound exactly alike. Even otherwise identical basses can have their own personalities. My Tux and my Blackstar have identical construction and electronics but they do not sound alike. They both sound like Ricks but they have different voices. The Tux has a softer, warmer tone. The BlackStar is a bright and totally balls out sounding bass. I attribute the differences to variations in the wood (resonance), the shape of the neck, and perhaps subtle differences in the electronics. Fingerboard wood definitely figures in the final tone.

I have never came across a rick yet with the same neck profile ! I have literally had a dozen of them and they were all different. I've also found that the ones with thinner neck have better attack . Bright and punchy but not overkill . The bigger necks are sluggish and have dead spots .as well as a distorted tone

Is "cowchevy" one of us?

Ted's bang on the money for me (as usual). All my Ricks sound/have sounded different, even acoustically, played side by side. My current CS and my old one were very similar though, although not exactly the same. I also tend to find the solid colour Ricks sound slightly harder and less "airy" to my ears, strange as it may seem.
