I need to get a finger rest for mine! Though I'd never use it, it just looks cool!
How do you know where to locate it, or do you just eye-ball it?

I placed it after looking at a few photos to see where it should go. The positioning does seem to vary a bit, the important thing is not to place a screw in the channel for the toaster lead!

Actually, all of my 60's basses have the hole for the screw in the toaster channel. That's where it's meant to be it seems.
I recently put the original rest back in the white bass and the toaster started cutting out.
I then remembered why I took it out all those years ago...

That's all Ric (in my opinion) needs to do...have a RM1999 configured bass available for order. With the "finger rest"(sawry about calling it a thumb rest...my bad) and thin out the neck profile as slim as they dare. I agree that the new style truss rods are an improvement. They are. It's the looks that count.(well, and the sound-real horseshoe?) I also think that new products should be brought to market for the player that is looking for "something completly different". I'd like to order a new bass in 2006 and I enjoy playing and the looks of the "original" instruments. I hope Rickenbacker can offer me(and I suspect many other customers...yup, we ARE the customers) products we can get excited about. Note: only my OPINION, and if I didn't care I wouldn't take the time to post.
