Hmmm, how do you do "shaded white"??

The inspiration for this color hit me over the Christmas holidays when I was in Guatemala.

Uh Mr. Hall, would that be Montezuma Brown?
I think that was a finish offered in the 50's and would look mighty fine on a 350v63 or 4001c64, in my humble opinion...
If not, I'm told the Guatamalan flag has lots of Powder Blue in it, sorta like the recent Blue boys??????

I heard Montezuma meant Autumnglo in Spanish..(LOL)

I just got home from work, and I'm flipping thru some my Rick books, trying to find a picture of one in Montezuma Brown. It is listed as a color option for the Combo 450 and 425 on page 24 of the Bacon/Day Rickenbacker book, and there is a picture of one of those old 50s Rick Postcards on pg 22 showing a 425 that MIGHT be it. The postcard says something about "two-tone brown".
I don't think I've seen a picture of this finish before, unless it really is the old Autumnglo...

I forget which book I was thumbing through, but I recall seeing a Combo 800 in Montezuma Brown. If memory serves, I believe it is a darker brown than the Autumnglo. I suppose it is somewhat of a "two-tone brown"; getting darker towards the edges of the body.

That must be the Japanese book that is out of print, I remember seeing some sorta yellow to brown bursts in that book of the kind you are describing. I think that's a great color choice for the new year!

Montezuma Brown was a single rich, deep shaded brown. The yellow appearance in the light areas of these old guitars comes from a yellowed clear coat. Probably all of these old guitars were nitrocellulose which we used until sometime in late 1957 or early 1958. In any case, it's a much stronger, deeper, and rich color than either Walnut or the later matte Autumnglo.

Well, I can't wait to see it, and I bet it'll look great on a 350, or for that matter any Rick!

You're jumping to conclusions. The color of the year for 2003 hasn't been announced yet.

Well, if Montezuma Brown is "a single rich, deep shaded brown," then either the book I saw had it wrong (...and it wasn't in Japanese) or I do. Regardless, I DID see an image of a Combo 800 that had a dark brown, burst-like finish that got very dark on the edges. Whatever the name of the finish I saw, it was certainly darker than any Walnut or Autumnglo I've seen.

Yeah, He's very cryptic about it, referring to it as a "single rich, deep shaded brown" in one sentence, then then he refers to the "light areas of the finish" in another. The Smith book has some pictures of Montezuma Brown on page 98. One shows a Combo 400 on display at a trade show, and it appears to be a single solid color. I'm wondering if the picture right next to it, where a model is holding the "Custom Built", is an example of Montezuma Brown. I love that finish, and, whatever it is, I'd sure like to see that be the Color of the Year! I also like the pic of one of the Kim sisters holding a 310(pg 93), that looks like the same finish...
I think John Hall wants us to speculate about this for a little while longer before he finally lets us in on it. But I've been wondering about this for weeks already, since before the end of the year.
