Yeah, the 4003 changed to a bigger fretwire and has higher nickle content . They dont seem to get ate up as fast as the old wire did.

It's a '54 Fender reissue Single coil Precision Bass in Blue Flower. Now, it is really only un the style of a 54 and not a true reissue (blue flower was not available in 1954; it was available on the '68 Telecaster Bass, but that version had the slab side body and my '54 RI has the contours. confused)?
A terrific bass, I got it from Guitar Trader when they were blowing them out for $399 shipped. I put a Badass II on it and a SD 1/4 lb pickup and run Rotosound Swing Bass 66's on it. IT is the closest Fender I have to the Geddy sound, with the single coil it clanks!!!

I put that same pickup in my 4001's bridge spot..the pole pieces lined up perfectly, and it fit in there with no mods. kept it there for several years. Nice pickup, better mids than the stock hi-gain. Got a lot of compliments on the sound, esp. from a recording engineer who also had a 4001 lying around...he said he never could get his to sound that good.

I always thought the Seymour Duncan 1/4 pound 50s single coil would make an excellent 4001/4003 pickup ...

Thats what his is I believe. In pink with some kind of flower design on it. Its weird looking. But gees is it pretty. Feels great. Image You should send me some pictures of yours.

Sorry for getting off subject.

Sure thing, I will- I have more.

The pink one he has is most likely the Pink Paisley version, AFAIK it is not as common as the Blue flower.

If you can get by the finish, IMO it is one of the best Fenders out there. It certainly is my favorite bass, next to my 4001 that is. Image

Swinging them like axes(that's what they are, after all) towards each other, the chunky-necked new 4003's will win against an old thin-necked 4001

.....in combat, of course

I like it. I love those pickguards and how the flowers give away towards the end of it. They are awesome. Oh and I know what you mean about playing one. I got to play his for a few and its great. I loved it. Wish I had one. They really are awesome.
