the Ric growls the best ... the jazz growls also but not like the Ric ... the wal doesn't growl but it has a cool clean sound ... the steinberger has a cool sound but damn it is ugly ...

I think Geddy could play a washtub bass or a gutbucket and still sound awesome. It's just . . . Geddy. It's like, Entwistle ALWAYS sounded amazing, no matter what bass he played, and he played A LOT of different basses. Chris Squire, though mostly with the Ric, makes P-basses and the Mouradian sound very, very good.

Personally, I adore the Wal sound. Not as much as the Ric (hence, why I own a Ric and not a Wal, besides the price difference and two-year waiting list, though considering how long some people wait for Rics, that might be a moot point), but still. Definitely one of my favorite bass sounds ever. Despite only having known/been a rabid fan of Rush's music for the past 4 years, I feel they only ever made one bad album, which would be their debut. And, even then, it's not bad music . . . it's just not really Rush-like. "Grace Under Pressure" and "Power Windows" are two of my faves, actually, though I will admit that "Hold Your Fire", "Roll the Bones", and "Test For Echo" get significantly fewer spins than the others.

"Signals" remains my favorite album of all time. Not just Rush. Out of everything. Followed closely by "A Farewell to Kings" . . . ah, the days of the 4001 . . . I think we should write a petition and send it to him, asking that he record with a Rickenbacker again.

Ah, the usual "Geddy should play a Rick" thread. I agree, but his jazz sound is amazing IMHO. It's a little boomy and muddy now, but on Different Stages it was amazing. The tone on Moving Pictures is great too... but the Rick is my favorite.

Favorite Geddy bass tones:
1. Rickenbacker. It has balls and a ton of growl.
2. Wal. A very clean active sound with amazing high end.
3. Jazz bass. The growl he gets out of that thing is kick *** on Counterparts.
4. Precision bass. Pretty damn close to the Rick.
5. Steinberger. Very thin and farty. YYZ on the P/G concert video is fast as all hell, but the tone sucks.

Geddy called into an Atlanta radio station about a month ago, and when I heard him, I called 'cause I was gonna ask him why he didn't play the Rick anymore. Unfortunately, he hung up without accepting any calls.
As far as tone, I play my Rick and a Jazz bass both at gigs. I find the Rick pickups to be alot hotter than the Jazz pickups. Consequently, I only play the Jazz on a few songs and the Rick on the vast majority.

I just realized the other day that Geddy and I share a birthday - July 29. I wish I would have known that back in '76 when that sort of thing mattered to me as a crazed teenage fan.

I just came across a print of the bass I owned back around 1980 as a tribute to the man. I will try to scan and post it for positive ID by the forum, but I always remember it as a '68 4001JG (long gone for $200). This was before I was informed on such things, and I cry every time I look at the photo.

There was some talk here a while ago about unlocking some secret material on the R30 disc. Anybody remember what that was about?

There are some easter eggs, apparently, but I dont know where they are.

I found this on a Rush fan site. I have not tried it so I don't know if it works. Let us know if it works for you.


"First egg is on the opening menu. All you have to do is hit the right arrow on your DVD remote about 3 or 4 times. Eventually, the menu will reload with the egg on the bottom as a new option. The second egg is on the "Interviews" menu on the DVD. Again, just hit the right arrow about 3 or 4 times, and the guy with the broom will all of a sudden "highlight." Just click on him, and you have the second egg."

on Sunday Nov 21, 1982. I remember Geddy playing the Rick for most(maybe all) of the show. I was 16. I wasn't a huge Rush fan, but liked them enough to want to go. A buddy of mine called at the last minute with an extra ticket so I went. I had just bought my first Rick(my white 1980 4001) brand new about 6 months earlier so I was excited to see him playing his. 'Twas a great show!

And how about that ticket price...$12.50!!!! That's about what you pay Ticketshafter today!

I lost interest in Rush when the boat paddle came out!
