John,
My first decent guitar was a '69 or '70 420 that I bought from Patti Music in Madison, WI in 1971 as a senior in high school. I modded that guitar and when I traded it in 1975 there were three Gibson gold humbuckers on it!
Since I play a 420 I'm just aware of it's history more than most.
In 2000 I tracked down another Mapleglo 420 (a 1971) which I will keep stock this time! I'd love to get a 450 and a 650D. I'm a Cresting Wave guy!

Yes, the 'Cresting Wave' models can be a collection all on their own for sure, many different variations. Both the '62 425 and '61 450 I owned were great guitars in sound and playability. I'll own more of them someday!
