Well, you can always scoop out the existing surround. It takes a bit of patience and skill, but it can be done. The p.u. surround on both my June '74 4001 and my '79 4080 had to be thusly modified to prevent the E and the G strings from hitting it.
A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.

Thanks Guys,

I have had the bass for about six months now and aside from a little bit of recording work it has lived in its case, no place for a fine instrument IMHO.

If no one has a used surround then maybe, Ken, I could take up your kind offer to sort me out one. I would be very happy to pay for any expenses in sourcing the part.

Phil, if you could check that would be great.

Thanks again, Bob

I have exactly the same problem with my Sept 72FL. As I go up the neck the string hits the front of the surround. Whoever previously had the bass has filed a little of the metal for the G but not enough. Getting a scooped surround down here is a problem also so I'll probably do as Sergio suggests & machine it myself & rechrome it afterwards.

it is really a shame that Rickenbacker does not sell these parts like they used to ...

John, I don't have a good pic handy but it's identical to the one posted above by Bob Atherton. I once posted a thread asking when this changed & a few people note they had 73's with the scooped surround. I thought it had something to do with fretboard to deck height but this also a 21 pos neck & being fretless it has less height again. Then again perhaps there was just no scooped surround in the parts bin that day.
If anyone else has one after Bob's been taken care of maybe they could drop me a line [email protected]

Just realized that I THINK I have one in my Hamer 12 string bass case, I remember having an extra one and left it in the case. I'll check tonight.

Bob, the one I thought I had is straight across, not scooped. The scooped one was on my '73, this surround is from my old '75 Azureglo. Sorry if I got your hopes up!

This place is just the best!

Steve has sorted me out with a standard surround, Philip wishes to trade his scooped for the standard one that I am getting from Steve, sorted!!!

Thanks again for everyone’s help.

The bass will be gigging in about three week’s time.
