To me, it's an okay song, but I was probably about 10 when it came out and was not into music then.
One thing for those who are not familiar with The Kingsmen: the band gave rise to Sunn amplifiers. A better telling of that story than what I can recount can be found here:

Green Giant! haha! Yeah I have the album, was their third I think. For those who don't know and probably don't care it was a vegetable Co.

Its the ultimate garage song.... flawed to the max but it captures that certain primal rock'n'roll thing.
Great song.... and so many bands screw it up by not getting that minor chord on the 5.

Actually the Kingsmen are from Portland.
The Kingsmen formed in Portland, Oregon in 1959. As young teenagers, they played high school parties, teen dances, supermarket openings, and fashion shows. Like many fledgling bands of the day, they copied what they heard on the radio: Elvis, The Ventures, Country music, r&b, and the burgeoning Northwest Sound. They became one of the most popular bands in the Portland area

Well where ever they're from they do or did an annual festival. I think it is Portland.
