I am setting up the pickup spacing, the cavities are router.

I notice on the bridge pickup that the strings are very close to the edge. They are over the black plastic cover, but are VERY close to the edge.

Is this normal? Well if not there's not much I can do about it, but hearing about the 4004CII5 pickups etc it has me a little concerned.

I'll put up pics later on today.

THanks!

The Ric hb1 and hb2 pickups can cover a string spacing of 2 3/8" or less very effectively ...

I think it's normal...the bridge PU on my laredo seems pretty much close to the edge of the PU.

I have never noticed any sound issue from that...

as long as the strings are above the black part you are OK ...

Here is what it looks like, as you can see it is very close:

You are right at the limit of the 2 1/4" rail of that pickup ... you will not have a volume dropoff ...here's one of my 4004 basses with the hb pickups ...

I have found that going to the edge of the black works fine ... but if none of the string is in the black then it will have a dropoff in volume ...

"the strings are very close to the edge."

But are they just by the river?

I just wired it up, just 1ea 500k pot, no tone knob, and the bridge pup solo- no volume drop off, the pickup(s) sound GREAT, I will like this one a lot when finished.
Thanks for the help!!!

I am VERY impressed with the HB1's. Basically it is Mickey-moused now, I do plan on putting in a tone pot, .047 cap per the RIC diagram. I don't even have a ground going to the bridge and it is whisper quiet. I almost don't want to take the bass down it is so fun (but it still needs to be sealed, painted etc)

Just playing these pickups, makes me want to order a 4004 sight unseen.

Dave, you probably would not be disappointed if you did. Image

Unless it was a MB and the finish bleeds all over you...

I odered my Laredo sight-unseen, and have never once regretted it.

Update-
Wired up, borrowed the neck off of my '74 P while I wait for the new neck to come in. Need to string it up tomorrow to test the noise and wiring. I am an amateur at wiring and everything else.

The finish is ReRanch, it has orange peel but only because I stink at painting- also the pickguard looks amateurish and I will redo that- but hey I built it myself and is only my second project.
