Tony, I have a 1975 4000 FG, based on mine I can tell you…….
“With only one pickup in the body cavity, is the space below the pick guard routed or solid? “
Solid, but it is a joint area for the set neck.
“Is this one of the set neck models?”
Yes
“Fat neck/thin neck”
Thin, not as thin as my 72 4001 or shadow, but thinner than a standard 4001 of it’s time.

RE: sound...it's brighter, a more raw sound, & has lots of sustain.
Very much a different sound than a 4001.

Here's a pic under the guard...

That's also a decent shot of the contrast between the effects of some sunlight/age/smoke on FG finish, & the natural aging of FG under the guard.
Much pinker underneath, more amber on the unprotected areas.
It's a '76, BTW.

The 4000FL is indeed Burgundy. The 4001 next to it is Ruby; nice contrast in reds.
I think I've seen two 4000FLs on eBay over the last five years or so, so they are out there ...

It should be that simple, but mine sounds far fiercer than any 4001 I've had/played. Maybe it's the set neck?

It must be different body wood as well. Mine has quite a bite to it too. A bit less bottom end, but way more clank.
It's NOT for jazz

Mine sounds "cranky" compared to the 4001's.

It'd be interesting to take a poll of 4000 owners to see if they have a neck pickup rout or not. I've heard someone say JH once said if there's a rout there, it was done by someone else after it left the factory, but the '81 4000 I had definately had a factory rout there. I sold that bass for $300 twenty years ago...it was considered the "budget" model, and with the set-neck, was not nearly as desirable as a 4001 back then. Now I see them going for over a grand, and i think's it's pretty silly...strictly due to the fact it's not in production and is somewhat rare.

Kevin,
THANKS for the education! That is wild!
MORE sustain than a 4001?!? What a great shot!
I appreciate it!
Thanks again!

4000's don't have the 0047 capacitor like 4001/S's I'm led to believe. Gary, that FL must be the rarest of the rare. Somebody around here has an S FL as well. Probably just as rare. Love 'em.
