I would never own a bass that I would feel uncomfortable playing. As nice as some things are, the reason I own a bass in the first place is because I want to play it. If it looks amazing, it makes me want to play it more. If it's a rare bass, I wanna see how good it sounds!
If I were ever to stop playing a bass because of its rarity or antiquity, I would sell it. As much as basses are works of art (or not), they are also made for one thing and one thing only: to be used to make music. Unless it's an incredibly important historic artifact (Hendrix's Strat, for instance) that absolutely must be preserved because of extreme cultural significance, it should really be played.

I don't know about lumber, I think we need a scaffold!
I had the feeling that a lot of members here just opened the case every once and a while and then closed it again. It is good to see that most of us use the basses in the way that F C Hall intended.
Jeff, I think you have made me into a WB convert. When I first saw the WB I was not as excited over it as the standard single bound 4005. I now think it almost looks better!
If I was lucky enough to own a 60's Ric I sure as hell would want to gig with it. It would give me a great thrill to use one on stage, and it would give any RIC fans out there a buzz as well.

I gigged my 4004LK last Friday also. Awesome sound. I was fighting a 3 guitar wall of sound and it cut through it like butter. I wish someone would have taken some decent pictures.

Actually, just wondering, does anyone have a clip I could listen to of a 4004L all by itself, with no effects? Plugged direct would be nice too . . . I would like to get an idea of how they sound . . .

I saw Joey's band a couple of weeks ago. He played the trans red 4004cii5 most of the night and it sounded great. Very tight and it cut right through the mix. I really couldn't notice the sound loss when he was thumping on the B or G strings until I fully concentrated on it. Even then, it wasn't that bad, especially with the rest of the band playing and I doubt any non-bassist in the bar would have noticed. By the by, Joey's band is pretty good. The singer has some decent pipes and they're pretty tight. Joey ain't half bad either. =0)
