i went ahead and ordered. i had a guy here who had my guards for a month and never got to them.

hopefully soon i'll borrow someone digicam and take shots of both of my basses.

How are the plastic bridge pickup surrounds that he makes? I'm tempted to get one, but I don't know if I would like it or not . . . are they low enough that they would be the equivalent of a "scooped" bridge pickup surround? Also, do they come in silver?

Bob, the total height from the surround to the top of the pickup guard is 5/8 inches. It's pretty low, and I'd bet you would be pleased with it. As far as silver goes, you would have to ask Tony.

He could probably back paint them, just like the plexi guards.

I have three PGs he made for my'73 4001, he made a superb tort PG for the Fender AV '62 Jazz Bass I used to have, I have two PGs he made for my 4003FL, one the standard white and the other a white backed lucite PG, and the latest is one for my 4001V63. That bass and the FL and my 4005WB sport his plexi finger rests.

AND (!) he throws in a free guitar pick with every shipment, too!

I have a question for those of you who have had the white, back-painted lucite guards made: I haven't seen them on any Ricks other than the signature series models. All of the real Rick white guards that I've seen from the 60's to the present are the same opaque white plexi. So is it just a preference thing for the lucite, or did RIC actually used to make white, back-painted lucite guards?

And if it is a preference thing...why do you prefer them? Its my understanding that the material is more brittle and thus, more likely to crack at the screw holes.

(Not trying to be a tool here...just curious)

For mine Jeff, it's just preference. I know the cutoff (whenever it was!) was LONG before my '77 was born... but it looks so good as opposed to the opaque guard that was on it. I don't know... just seems to give a little added something to the looks, can't quite put my finger on it but it works!

It matches the TRC if you have a pre-74 Ric...

Another reason I'm considering ordering one is that a single-ply pickguard looks (IMHO) a bit cheap. 3-ply laminated guards look too Fender-like (although the 4002 had a 5-ply laminated guard with a beveled edge). The back-painted clear guard looks more special, and it's not un-Ric to have one - the CS sig has it.

I actually really like the thick, single-ply pickguard that Rics have. The flat, thick edges are a million times better as finger rests than any other pickguard I know of.
