John,
I found another one that is about 6K and it's a burgandyglo 1968. The condition is that of the RM4005 so I might go with that.
I would still prefer a later model.
Actually, my ideal is a July 1970 4005 any color and condition.
Anyone know of one like this?

FWIW, the first 4005 I saw, and was allowed to touch but not play, was a guy at my school who had a 71 or 72 FG. It was just stunning. FW MOP, check on the back, and that shape....... and that colour.....

I had one-
My band dubbed it the "Steak" bass- It looked like a Delmonico and played as good as a steak tastes...
This was years before I quit eating steak, but the name stuck....

There's always this one, 1968 at around $6,750 - I'm sure it's been mentioned before - but I don't know if they ship out of Japan?

Yes, that's the one. I contacted my friend in Yokohama to arrange shipping. Seems like there are issues (Tariffs) with regards to shipping large items out of the country.
The shop itself will not ship to the US.
Seems like the only solution is to go over there and pick it up.

That's funny you should mention that because I was thinking the exact same thing, mostly because of your wonderful adventure came to mind.
There was late 70's one that came up on the Mexican ebay site in beat up condition and the guy wanted $1,200 for it. I just missed the auction by seconds. Right when I got there it had ended and that's what it sold for, $1,200 USD. For that one I would have flown down to pick it up.
I trying to figure out a schedule to get to Japan.
