The Rutles, brilliant or not?

I thought I read that John was the Beatle that didn't like The Rutles, and threatened to sue. (Maybe that's the out-of-court settlement...) They do tend to skewer his songs and parody his styles over Paul's that's for sure.

Brilliant, indeed! But -- yes, you have to be a bit of a Beatles "nerd" to really get it.

That, or Eric is just an a**hole, which apparently he is in real life.

Hope that's not true -- ruins my whole image of him!

I have heard that he is the one everyone else in Python dislikes the most, so that's something anyway.

That cover version of the Rutles album came out about 1990, didn't it? Some great stuff on that...and some suitably off-the-wall versions, too.

The Rutles are fantastic!

When I first saw it, I didn't know about George, I never caught it! DUH!

I thought the movie was well made and VERY funny...

I have a hard time believing that "The Rutles" dough goes to The Beatles. Somebody show me some proof.

I saw a "Crossroads" episode on CMT the other night, with Bonnie Raitt and Lyle Lovett. The closing credits showed the musicians, and Ricky Fataar was listed as playing in Raitts' band. The name sounded familiar, and the Rutles popped into my head. Sure enough, the same guy!

You know a band is hep when they include a Rutles cover in their set.

Jwilli, the evidence is in the directors soundtrack itself - Eric Idle states that Neil didn't get any royalties, CBS jumped in and grabbed the lot.

I recall seeing Neil Innes on Saturday Night Live in the late 70's (I think Eric Idle may have been the host). With no introduction he came out (dressed in either black or white), sat down at a white piano and played 'Cheese And Onions'. He was doing his best Lennon impersonation that night. Lots of people actually thought it was Lennon (who hadn't been seen for a few years). Not long afterwards, that song started popping up on vinyl bootlegs as a rare Lennon tune. I've been a Rutles fan since I bought the album in 1978. I think 'Archeology' is brilliant. I've also become a fan of Innes' solo work, his Python songs and the Bonzos. He's a very gifted musician with a odd sense of humor. By the way, 'Can't Buy Me Lunch' is fun to watch. Not as good as 'All You Need Is Cash', but I wouldn't call it a rip-off. I enjoyed seeing it.
