Mr. Blakey- I hate to inform you, but Geddy Lee used his '72 Jazz bass on that entire record. I found that difficult to belive at first, too- but with careful manipulation, I can make my '75 Jazz sound almost identical. But I still prefer the Ricks!!

Bassman4080... I was not implying that he played a Rick on that album..after all the photo in the album is with the Jazz. I was talking about that wonderful warm-grindy sound (as I would describe it) that I really love. I feel that I have found a way to get that sound from my 4001 and solid state amp as I described. To me, the "Moving Pictures" bass-sound really grabs me and I wanted to be able to incorporate some of that into my own style and writing with the 4001.

AH.....my mistake. Didn't mean to offend.....and I absolutely agree- that is THE sound- especially in The Camera Eye....MAN!!.....I find my Jazz kinda gets that right outta the box, so to speak, with the right amp/cabinet combo- natural compression from the cabinet and all.......if you've got 'that' tone, you're one step ahead of me.....I can get close, but noooot quite with my Ricks......I'll have to give it a whirl- what's your rig?

You know...until last week I had that Camera Eye tone with the Snarlin Dog and an old Yamaha B100(2) with JBL 2x15 and Ampeg 4x10 cabs.
I just had the 4001 wiring restored (as described under "Luthier questions- Dc/Md/Va area luthier)
and now I am back to square one. The bass is now wired according to the diagram from the RIC site. The bass sounds better on it's own...punchier...and the wonderful R-O-S works now. But I cant get the Camera Eye tone yet (with the same settings)...I'm happier with the bass though. MUCH

Yea- just can't seem to match that tone with any of my 4001's- they're all bone stock (for now). The jazz- no sweat, but not the Ricks. Yet. I can get it with my 'Geddy Lee' Special Addition Jazz bass too (oddly enough!!)

But those old B100's- great amps, arent they?? I love 'em- had one a few years ago, sold it for a 'new' SVT III- big mistake- on the prowl for another one- very punchy amps- cabinet is not as much of an issue with those things for some reason....but cannot stand the Hartke amps or the GK amps for some reason.....not without my trusty PQ-3's, anyway....you probably already said before, but where'd you get the work done??

When I was in a punk band a hundred years ago I used a Maestro Brassmaster with a Rickenbacker 4001....
I could kill myself for selling that thing...it sounded great....I quit playing bass and switched over to guitar and sold it.....
what was I thinking getting rid of it????
dont remind me how much they go for now.....
oh well....
I have a brown maestro fuzz-tone like McCartney used on Rubber soul....

Yea, I've heard real good things about Southworth.....I'll give 'em a go....thanks for the tip....nice website, by the way.....I think I may try running a direct out of my rig into my guitar rig thru a submix bus.....I have an old set of Korg PME-40x pedals that are noisy as H but sound killer- bring a little overdrive mixed in with the original signal.....worth a shot, anyway.....thanks again!!

Chris Squire used that same Maestro Bass Brassmaster early on, early 70s. I'd love to find one sometime. I'm surprised they don't make them again, some of those Maestro things are being remade now, aren't they?

Hey , just found this column a few weeks ago. its great! Personally i have had several ricks in the past . wish i had them all back!!!! My favorite was a '73 in fireglow, through an SVT w/ 2 8/10's, it rocked!!!!!!! I even had a maestro brassmaster. but with all respect i could not compare with the tone of Chris Squire. nor would i ever etempt. I may have came "Close the Edge." a few times but only Chris Squire will be the one for the tone.
