I won't defend the wrongness of companies making Ric clones, but the neck thru Ibanez and Univox Stereo bass clones were (are) excellent instruments.
I'm most familiar with the Univox and they replicated nearly every detail of a circa '76 Ric 4001, including the cap mod. They were made from good wood and featured top notch craftsmanship.
The electronics were a weak point. The one I had, the previous owner had put Ric higains in and it sounded just like the real deal.
Ultimately the reason I got rid of mine is that it wasn't the real deal. Not because it didn't sound authentic, but because it wasn't authentic (and as we all can attest to, there's something to be said about owning the real thing).
I guess my point is that the clones are easy to dismiss as being something to "get by with" or just a "cheap" alternative. That just isn't the case.
IMO, YMMV, of course.

Got rid of mine for more or less the same reason. That and the wife said we needed the space!!
She now lives in Denmark and it would be nice to see a picture just to see that she's ok.
As far as the sound goes, and at the risk of sounding like a heretic, it was pretty close. But that's me basing the comparisons solely on my '05 MG.
