The thing about horseshoes is that , IMHO, they just get in the way.

I recently sold my prototype V63 because of the ‘shoe. I also needed funds for my EUB, but of all my RICs I chose the one with a horseshoe. It was a great looking bass, it was a great sounding bass, and for some of the time it was a great playing bass, but oh boy, did that slab of metal get in the way.

I would have thought that aside from die hard RIC fans most bass players would go for a high gain with full playing access around the pick up. I hope I’m proved wrong, because I can’t deny that a horseshoe and a ½ inch spaced toaster at the neck looks the business.

I guess Macca can’t be the only bassist to prefer a high gain?

I have a "love-hate" relationship with the horseshoe.

I love the way it looks, but it really gets in my way.

I have to say they are far more style over substance. They look good, but they do get in the way for a vast majority of players I would imagine.

My 67 project will have a hi-gain for playability without a doubt.

I don't know anything about cutting plasma, but as for cutting cheese......

About them horseshoes...Sure, they look cool. But I'm more interested in how my bass plays and how it sounds than how it looks. And that pickup sounds and plays fantastic with the shoes off.

the plasma cutter utilizes highly charged 'air' or plasma under pressure, to cut through any conductive metal. So while the ole standard oxy/ace torch went through ferrous metals, this pup will do aluminium as well.

Thus the need for 3ph power as the better the current-the better the cut.

Could I just replace the hi gain bridge pickup with the horseshoe? Does it matter if it is a 4003 or a 4001?

Does anybody but me actually like how the bass plays with the horseshoe on? When i'm playing fingerstyle, I play by the neck, and when i'm playing pickstyle I lean on it.

the only thing I like between me and my bass strings is air ... but horseshoes sure are pretty to look at ...

I'm actually wondering if the horseshoes would even really get in the way of my playing. The main gripe I had with the pickup cover on the hi-gain was that it was very rectangular, so it had high angles that got in the way of my hand. From what I've seen, the horseshoes are much more curved, and I don't think they would be a problem . . . I'd have to try it out to be sure though . . . anyone wanna lend me a V63? Permanently?

Also, how exactly does a horseshoe pickup sound compared to a hi-gain? Is there any noticeable difference between how it sounds with the shoes on and with them off?
