Bob's on the right track. It's not 4.7pf, that's too small. I can never tell unless I have the chart in front of me....

Yeah I had to look it up online too. It would be 4.7 nf but I don't think that unit is commonly used.

only thing wrong is that in English they are pico and micro. and pf and uf are much more commonly used. pf in old equipment is sometimes written as uuf. or micro micro farad

Given that the cap is in series with the pickup and the audio goes through the cap you might want to get one that sounds good.

I agree with Jps. RIC in the old days used 200 to 400 V caps (from the pics I've seen). Ceramic caps would tend to sound gritty in a negative way.

I have a ceramic cap in mine and it sounds gorgeous. Maybe I've been lucky, but I haven't had a single problem with using it or the 'vintage tone' switch I've installed. I do use quality solder and wires though, maybe thats the key!

Whoever makes the cap will determine which unit they use, the originals are .0047 uf. 4.7 nf and 4700 pf are all the same cap just different units. Philip it's just like the metric system, 1 liter has 1000 milliliters in it or 10 deciliters etc. Those are all the same quantity too just different units.

Back in the late sixties, early seventies when I was learning elctronics in the Navy, we called a uuf, a mickey-mike. FWIW
