thanks for the info guys...lots of stuff I didn't know about. David, the chances of me finding a rick in a pawn shop in my town are slim to none...ebay would probably be my best bet. I live near Moncton, New Brunswick and there isn't a whole lot of music shops or pawn shops. And David you wouldn't happen to be french would you? I noticed you spelled bass the french way. I'm somewhat of a frenchman myself...I go to a french university.
"Rickenbacker!"( I shout it out whenever I spot one)
"Rickenbacker makes the best basses in the world!"

Matt: Keep searching the internet for the guitar you're looking for. I googled 4003FG until I found a dealer that had one in stock. Then I called and had them hold it for me for 24 hrs while I couriered a certified cheque to them.
The place I bought from was Guitar Resurrection in Austin Tx.

They currently have four RIC's in stock for sale and a bunch on order.

Hey Matt, nope not french... I was just trying to find some close spelling of "bass" for my on-line handle and hey, the french version worked because no one else had used it.
I'd suggest doing a weekly search of some of the biggest vintage retailers that often get in used Rics, there are 3 here in Toronto that you might want to bookmark:
Capsule: http://www.capsulemusic.com/
Songbird: http://www.songbirdmusic.com/
12th Fret: http://www.12fret.com/
They're all really good at posting their used gear pretty quickly and they'll ship to wherever you are. I think most of them also keep want lists in case you want to e-mail them with exactly what you're looking for... I'll let you know via the Form if I see something good pop up in any of them in the near future.
Good luck!

Plus five minus five!
Interesting thread guys. I am going to pick up my Rick in month or two (whenever it's ready) just over the border a Niagara Falls. I've been told that I will basically pay GST and PST (15% all told in Ontario) and that's it. A customs guy also told me that I won't be able to get my NY sales tax back because it is considered a "destination tax?" Any insights on this? When I do go over, what should I bring in terms of papers. I was assuming the sales receipt would do?
By the way, I was in Capsule Music on Saturday-first time that I've seen them Rick - free. Songbird too though I find they rarely have Rickenbacker guitars.

Bill - since you're going to NY for the pick up, you'll have to pay the NY state sales tax on the guitar. If you had the store ship the guitar to you you wouldn't have to pay sales tax. You won't have to pay a brokerage fee as you're bringing the instrument over the border yourself. Since the value (as noted on the sales receipt), is more than the daily value of goods you're allowed to bring back, you'll be on the hook for GST and PST. I think the sales receipt is all you'll need, although they may ask about the country of manufacture (which shouldn't be an issue because of NAFTA).

Are you sure about that? I was told that I would have to get a professional broker on anything over $1600CDN even if I carry it myself, and without proof of origin, they could ding you another 7% in duty. I'm going to have to look into that one again.
