I think I've seen it somewhere along the line, maybe in Peru.

Ok, thanks, Sergio. I will pull out the ole pocket knife and try again.

What I need to know is where to get Alnico 5 rod magnets 1/4" in diameter with length the thickness of a high gain bobbin.....

Why not try and find magnetically conductive, suitably sized slugs and use the original magnet (or a stronger one)?

Hi everyone,

I guess I started this post, and left another one after adjusting the pool pieces on my 360. I used a silicone adhesive and it worked fine.

One magnet was a little tough to get off at one place and, but I slowly worked it off with a knife and it came off, looked a little bit chewed up, but went back in fine.

I should have checked with an ohm meter, but my Hi Gains are really hot almost to the point of being over the top. This makes my RIC really weird. I also have an '88 Strat that is cleaner and has a sweeter sound. My 360 is the one I use to distort and overdrive... no jangle there!

I'm not sure what impact the glue has in separating the magnet from the pole pieces. But when I glued the magnet back on I put the least amount on where the high strings pole pieces were.

I hope this helps!

John

Well, today I found a source for Alnico 5 rod magnets (1/4" x 1/2") and have 36 coming (minimum order $). And I did get the magnet off the bobbin - once I got a razor knife behind the magnet it popped loose. Now the wait for UPS - and Monday a holiday here in the US!

Will do - you probably guessed why I'm doing this experiment...

Ok, the magnets came yesterday late and I had to work. I did get 4 rods mounted in the old unwound neck high gain pup. It is unwound to a 7.2K ohm reading. Just playing it through my Tascam CD-BT1mkII (it was very late and my wife was sleeping) and I was smiling. I played along (ok, attempted) with Fragile (SSOS and I can play LDR) and was pleased. Today I got a chance through the Ampeg SVT2 Pro and 12" speakers and it has more growl than the origional high gain bridge pup unwound to 7.8k. I believe it sounds about the same as a Toaster if it was there, tonally. Very similiar characteristics between the neck Toaster and this modded pup.

I just wish I'd ordered some 5/16" and 3/8" rods. The toaster has 6 1/4" rods that are a bit more longer than the ones I ordered. Where's that CC....

Thread revival - I ordered 5/16" diameter alnico magnetic rods 1/2" in length and they came today. So I pulled the treble pup back out, pulled the 1/4" diameter magnets, and started drilling the holes out to 5/16". Three went just fine but on the fourth at the edge, I got just into the plastic and out came copper! Looking at the bobbin, the holes are offset to one side of the bobbin and obviously one was too close and went through the windings. So now I look for another pickup.... Sigh. I will look at the neck high gain when I get home to see if drilling that one out will work. I know the hole spacing on this one is narrower than the bridge bobbin, but with the 5/16" rods I may be alright.

Need a new pickup?

WHat are you going to do with the old pickup? I might be interested in it as a rewind experiment.

The bobbin on the damaged one is drilled through where the winding is, and the other holes for the string sensing "nails" are 5/16". Not really do-able.

I have considered gluing in the magnet on that damaged hole and then rewinding, but I'm also considering a toaster for the bridge position, ala JPS. Wish RIC would offer the HS again on the Boutique. Soon, I hope.

Right now I drilled out the neck pup bobbin for 5/16" magnet rods and am using that, but the string-to-string spacing is slightly wrong. Being a cheapskate I have to think about this.

John: I see a hint from Sergio. Have you sent him an email? Just in passing, he does great work.
