Dave, that is neat...thanks for posting. From what I can tell without my guitars in front of me, the guitars I have will fall right in line with this data...

Maybe it's indeed 871, I don't know, I just (try to) read what it says in the cavity... However - your theory does suggest GB 071 is basically impossible. I tend to agree - still, no answer from RIC yet (also posted on their forum).

As well as GB071 and GB871, GB671 and GB971 are also distinct possibilities in accordance with both the sequence and the photos.
The photos of the control cavity, show the position of the first digit's circle to be near the top, and much smaller, relative to the '7'. This rules out a '0' or a '6'. There is also a flat spot in the circle on the right hand side, where the pencil overlaps its first pass. This, to me suggests a '9', missing it's leg. I think it's easier to drop the leg off a '9', when writing awkwardly on a rough surface, than to miss the entire bottom circle of an '8'. Also, if it were an '8', the overlap would be at the bottom of the circle, not the right hand side.
If you ask me, GB971.
