Grover Titans and Schaller M4S tuners are pretty much the exact same tuner. The only difference I know of is that the Grovers have two screw holes, whereas the Schallers have none. I have a set of Grover Titans on my Odyssey bass, and they're great tuners; not expensive, and very high quality.

As far as what was on Geddy's bass there, they looked like regular Schaller M4 tuners, not the M4S tuners. The M4 tuners have small, closed gears.

I really don't think you could go wrong with any of them.

I could swear they look like the big bulky tuners.

Not sure sure which of these.. Oh well, I have the schallers, that'll save me some hassle.

Nah,,, some idiot installed the big ones on my '76 4001 somewhere down the line, they're very noticable and cause neck dive. I dont think Geddy would have put up with that.

I say they're the smaller Shallers.

Nate, if you're gonna part with the Schaller M4S tuners to get the small M4 tuners, I might be interested . . . they wouldn't happen to be gold, would they?

Oh, also, I just watched the video again, and basically freeze-framed every time you could see the back of Geddy's headstock (which was actually quite a few times). They're DEFINITELY the Schaller M4 tuners, not the M4S tuners . . . so yeah, Geddy used the small, close-gear ones, Nate, not the ones that you posted above that are pretty interchangeable with the Grover Titans. The tuning key is the same exact size, but the gear itself on Geddy's is not exposed, and it's much smaller (they weigh a lot less). The post is the same size, I believe.

Here are the Schaller M4 tuners.

Here's Geddy's bass.

The M4's are too small.
His has a line in the center of the tuner key. The smaller ones do not. The Grover's and the M4S's have the line, hence the confusion.

I think the tuners you need are Gotoh GB7. They are sealed like the Schallers and have the bulge in the center. Like a cross between Grover Titan and Schaller M4.

Yeah, you're right, the tuning keys are smaller, but Geddy definitely doesn't have open-gear tuners.

the large schaller and grovers were popular in toronto at that time. i prefered the schaller m4 (12 mm)for my ricks as the peg hole did not have to be enlarged (16mm), thus not altering the peghead. after those large machines, it's difficult to return to original machines without doweling and re-drilling the hole to insert the smaller diameter ferrule.
