Cover better than original
Bob, Bill good points but I think Bob is correct in his observation that Dylan covers are in the in the interpretation vein. I suppose one could argue that all covers are interpretations but my definition of cover for this topic is where an artist/s stick pretty close to original version whilst perhaps adding something or not to it.
The Dylan covers were so drastically different to Dylan's originals that in some instances people perceive them to be the original.

As far as Dylan is concerned, i'd suggest Simon & Garfunkel's version of "The times they are a-changin'" is slightly better than the original; i'd suggest the best version (imho) of this song was done by Blackmore's night, but it goes far from the main topic since it's not the version from the 60s.
As far as "Blue suede shoes" go... i'd suggest it might be kind of a "psychological" thing - like, which one you've heard first, or which one is strongly associated with a certain sweet moment in your life (some also say it's just me - always having to say "i disagree" - could be, but i really do prefer Carl's version
)
One of the nicest covers IMHO - wouldn't say it's better than the original, but very interesting in my view - Swinging Blue Jeans take on "Ol' man mose" by Louis Armstrong.

Nothing will get you dead quicker than being deadly serious about yourself.
One of my all time favorite cover tunes is "Out of Time" (Jagger/Richards) recorded by Chris Farlowe.
In fact, I like it just as much as I like the original.

Certainly here in UK I would think the Beatles version of Twist and Shout was first time many of us would have heard it. The searchers did a version on their first album released about 4 month after Beatles first album and a credible version it was too. Never really like Brian Poole and The Tremeloes version though although it did make number 4 in UK charts in July 63.

I got it. "Spirit in the Night" was the other Manfred Mann cover, much better than the orig. Could find very little on iTunes on MM, just one greatest hits album, and that was before the more current Springsteen covers. Anybody know where to download these MM/Springsteen covers?
