Pekka's comment about that album is right on the money, I think. I never really thought about that aspect much, but it is quite an intimate feeling group of songs. More so than previous work, or anything that followed.
From what I've read it was pretty much a flop at the time, & the band took it fairly hard, thus leading to the "to hell with all of you" attitude very much in evidence on 2112.

Bastille Day & Anthem are 2 songs which I haven't listened to for a few years, but on hearing them again they still sound fresh & alive. Classic stuff. That's the trick to good song writing: trying to get that timeless vibe.

I think all of rush's stuff is great although I am a bigger fan of their early music. Fly by Night and Caress of Steel are two of my favorite albums and I'm 99% sure Caress of Steel was all Rick except for the weird growly noises in The Necromancer...that's got to be his P-Bass it sounds just like the effects on By-Tor.
