Jeffrey I'm going to do something about the incorrectly (in my opinion) placed dots, I'm not sure yet, hate to modify it but I know that will drive me crazy and I want to play this one.

It sure does take getting used to coming from necks with the dots in the fret positions. The Zon is correct and the Rick Turner has fret lines so it is irrelevant on that. The NS CR4M has dots in the correct positon, also.

Yeah I've never seen a fretless with dots between the notes, I think they used regular 4003 binding or something. I learned on an old P bass fretless and still prefer that method, dots at the third, fifth, etc. I also hate fretlines.

I learned on a "P" as well. I also have a doubleneck Frt and Ftr-less. On that one, it has the drawn in fret-lines. I must admit that I like the visual markers better.

I did play out the BB FL last night. With the use of a in ear monitor system and an Ampeg stack, I was able to hit all the notes, in key, with no problem.

How does it sound Dave? Big like the new 4003's do?

I still need to play with the "pull up" tone switch to get the best sound.

For me, I think a FL bass should sound great un-plugged. When I played this one at the POTR, it sounded the best of three he had in stock. Great tone even un-amplified.

Rounds or flats, Dave?

It has rounds from the factory. I am thinking of flats, but it sounds sweet the way it is now..

Put flats on it as the finish will wear down pretty quickly otherwise. Mine sounds great with Chromes on it.

You could always try compressed rounds . . . DR Sunbeams come to mind . . .

Or you could strip off the current finish, put 6 coats of Petit's Polly Poxy on it, restring with rounds, and play comfortably for the rest of your natural life with no wear & tear on the fretboard.

Nah, they sound the best with good old flatwounds you get that growl that you don't get with RW's, sound much thicker also and the worst part is unless they changed the fretboard finish rounds will eat right through it to the wood very quickly as I almost found out years ago. I did refinish that bass, an early 80's 4001FL with two part epoxy and it never sounded the same, it was always dull sounding after that. They sound great stock with good flatwounds. The finish they have transmits the sound into the wood very nicely unlike the thick krap on a lot of fretlesses, it is fragile though but I think it would have to be to be sensitive like that. I am having Pyramid Golds put on mine, they have a very round sound and are tailer made for fretless bass I would think.
