"It would also worry me to take a totally mint unscarred bass on stage."
I hear you. I've only gigged with my old 4001's and since they are not mint a new ding won't upset me. I still have yet take my 1990 mint 5ver out on a date.

These all see regular gig use......
......that's what they were made for! I had some minor apprehension about gigging with my LK but it would be a shame to leave it in it's case at home while I have all the fun.

I saw the LK on Ric's site before they came out! They are sooooooooo awesome! That is unreal that you have one! Of course, they are meant to play!

Yes, Kaia, I am certainly glad I ordered one when I could.....I think they were all spoken for within a few months!
Even with steady usage all of my gear still looks essentially new so I really don't understand people's apprehension to play their instruments out at gigs.....just be somewhat careful and there shouldn't be a problem.
As far as used vs. new.....there's no way I'd pay what people are getting for used "run of the mill" Rics. Well featured vintage examples, discontinued models or special editions are another matter. To spend near "new" prices for a used Ric just doesn't make sense to me.

Good for you for getting the LK. That is the prettiest bass I have ever seen!
I figure that if you buy a good instrument, it should last forever if you take care of it! How are ya gonna get the patina and mellow vibe of vintage if you don't play it?> I was happy with buying a used bass. I am partial to vintage, although, I don't know much about electonics and stuff. I can probably learn a lot hanging out here!
I bought some nice pearl congas two years ago, and they have dings on them from carrying them around! Worse yet, I punched a hole in the rear window of my Infiniti convertible with them. I put the top down, put my equipment in, then put the top up. Well, I put it down on top of my congas............blech! THey match my 4001MG, though!

Play em!
When I look at what I earn for playing gigs, and also what it costs for gas, mileage, and bass strings... dings on my basses are pretty inconsequential. Besides, they sound better with age. I'm with Brian... play em!

I agree, they are there to be played. I would feel nervous about a brand new RIC on stage. I have no problem gigging with my '72, so'it's not a question of the value, it's just the thought of getting that first ding....

Back on topic, the best way to spend it is to send it to me!!

Then I can buy a 4001!
